Im a guy with a degree in economics! Worked at a bank, with a guy who eventually became one of my best friends, he got into trading, got good enough to leave our job, created a Youtube channel which is large, etc. I started watching videos on trading, lost a LOT in the beginning, and then got to the point where I was simply just losing less, and at the losing less/ almost BE is when I took the jump to leave!

Being 100% honest though when I started trading it was ALL technicals, for the first few years. Adding the fundamentals (which I already knew) was a beautiful addition since it tells you the "why" things move. Technicals are the "when". Helps gauge overall where things are heading.

if you strip it down to the basics, trading is just microeconomics + statistics 101

personally i got a degree in finance but then spent most of my career in advertising before phasing out and focusing on trading. very different day to day work but same math when it comes to running tests, validating results, forecasting, planning etc.

Background doesn’t really matter in trading IMO, and most people that try trading these days have don’t have relevant backgrounds. The irony is the people that tend to progress faster at first in trading are often not academic at all.

My background is mathematics, and while my pattern recognition & logical reasoning ability has been incredibly useful in trading, and part of why I chose trading, it’s also been part of what’s held me back, especially in terms of mindset.

Math has rules and pre-determined outcomes, a strong sense of certainty that comes from “if this, then that”. If you solve it correctly, you get the answer every time, guaranteed. And if you get the wrong answer, it’s because you did something wrong, guaranteed.

In trading, you can do everything correctly and still lose a trade. You can do everything correctly and still lose *multiple trades in a row*. Getting the “wrong” result *doesn’t* necessarily mean you did anything wrong.

This is quite a challenge to reconcile, and led to a mindset where I thought if I just study hard enough, try enough strategies, I can find “the answer”and thus entirely eliminate uncertainty and stop being “wrong”. But that’s a futile effort in trading, given that any individual outcome is just a probability, and will always have a degree of randomness to it.

The only math field that may help with trading in terms of mindset would probably be probability & statistics, given the statistical & probabilistic nature of trading. Ironically, that’s also the field I never did very well in.

Did the finance job help you when you finally transitioned to trading did it give you any transferable skills? And what job would you recommend for someone just starting out in finance that has an interest in trading? Also whats your YouTube channel?
