A big issue is that people confuse "consistently profitable" with "green every day."

I trade fulltime and I only spend around 15-30 minutes throughout the day on it and it’s more than enough to make 10% in a month or more. It completely depends on your trading style lol, there’s no need for “full day of managing and monitoring positions”. Use the alerts and it will tell you when to go look at the charts instead of trying to babysit positions

Its still better than being in a shitty paid 9 to 5 with no carreer options. Daytrading gives opportunities to earn a lot of money - from everywhere

I got out of IT after 15 years and started walking dogs full time. I trade in the morning and I can continue to make swing trades while I walk my dogs during the afternoons right on my cell phone. I made more money walking dogs and trading than I did at my 9:00 to 5:00 in my first year. Just today I bought Nvidia at 218.23. sold 30 minutes later at 220.98. +$177. Now I'm on to walking dogs today until 2. Then I have the rest of the day to just chill do whatever I want.

My setup happens once a day at market open, it either works or doesnt and I shut it down. Doing the same thing for 6 years. Wouldn't trade this life for any 9-5. Yes it was hard to get here, over 3 years of experimentation and failure. The market changes and I have to adjust the strat occasionally but not as often as people think. The core is always the same. Just the r/r that I tweak occasionally. Anyway there's an infinite amount of ways to trade and every single successful trader i know trades in a different way that supports their own psychological profile.

Hm, suggesting that this applies as a general rule to all full-time trading, or that downtime is minimal across the board, isn’t accurate. It’s obviously not passive income, but depending on your setup and approach, active screen time can be very limited. I have days where I spend maybe 20 minutes on the charts and call it a day. I rarely spend the whole day manage positions intraday, even though I run a mix of scalping, intraday, and position trading across multiple markets. Where I spend most of my time is at the end of the month doing performance reviews and adjustments, but that’s really it. I probably average 2–3 hours a day at most, because I have my exact time horizons where I trade, what I trade, and when I trade. Automate your stuff. Being glued in front of a screen for more money is better than for less money, but it’s still wasted time. Let that money work for ya.

I actually think it's pretty easy if you don't get greedy. I'm usually done by breakfast with my goal.

Or, they sit on their hands and do nothing when they don't have an edge. And they use the down time to clear their mind and reset so they can be ready to go when it re-appears. "If anyone thinks full-time trading is easy or that you just check the chart once a day, leave a position running, then chill in a hammock playing clash of clans or chipsy all day, you're seriously mistaken." This week I will be playing golf a few few times, going out to lunch with my in-laws, and will be monitoring the charts a few times a day. I won't be trading at all I don't think. My edge isn't present, I am mentally in need of a break, and I look forward to coming back when the time is right. "You can go a full month without being profitable. You can hit a nasty losing streak. Are you actually prepared for that?" If not being profitable for a month is going crush you mentally or financially, you shouldn't be trading full time or your sizing is incorrect. The only way you should be trading full time is if you don't need to trade full time to survive. With all of that said, my "full time" day trading life is chill AF; it's like semi-retirement. I think most could handle it was ease. I didn't go full time until there was almost limitless space to keep the mental part of this in check and I have years of financial runway. I wouldn't recommend any one try to cut it trading full time if you need the money to survive on a month to month basis.

Also, the less you trade, the more profitable you usually become. I don’t stare at charts for hours every day anymore , that was me back when I was still unprofitable 😂

I dont know. Full time trading for me is like 3hours of work a week. Mostly a waiting game. But also, I dont review mistakes or wins, just stop loss at 5% and take profits in steps at 2%,5% then trailing stop loss. I think the most important piece that people cant figure out and eventually burns them is size of trade.

I agree. I have a profitable edge but I’ve also backtested and seen what the losing streaks were like.. they don’t wipe me out but it’s definitely something I need to prepare myself for down the line.

Solid post, appreciate the honesty. The mental side is what catches most people off guard, losing streaks hit different when it's your actual income. The monitoring part is also underrated, people think "set and forget" is a strategy. It's not. Good reality check for anyone romanticizing this lifestyle.

This is the part a lot of newer traders don’t really internalize until they live through it. Even if your strategy is solid, full-time trading turns into a routine of decision-making under uncertainty, not “set and forget” income. The screen time is one thing, but the real load is the mental tracking of risk, exposure, and not letting one bad stretch change your behavior.

Full-time trader here. Yeah, that is not how my day goes. I’m a futures scalper. Trading is easy for me because I made it so. I spent thousands of hours researching and years trading and honing my strategy rules and boundaries to make it simple. I screen shot every trade I have made in the last few years and go through them like flash cards so I keep my eye sharp for what my setup looks like. I don’t break my rules because that adds stress and stress and emotions don’t belong in trading. I don’t trade market open or trade all day. I trade from ten until noon. I sleep in past 9:30 every day. I take 1-3 trades in a day across multiple accounts. They usually last a few seconds to a handful of minutes. I’m not managing positions all day and glued to my computer. I don’t even have a desk. I lay in bed and trade in my underwear mostly. I check my phone every few minutes to see if a setup occurs. If I’m really feeling lazy I will set an alarm when the market hits an area I’m interested in and will just lay in bed and play on my phone or read. When the setup occurs I get ready and put in my order. I set the bracket order to the correct areas in the DOM. If the trade kicks in I get in with it. I leave it alone. I don’t “manage” my position, scale in, scale out, set my loss to break even etc. it wins or it doesn’t. My job is to identify the setup, take the setup and set the profit and stop in the correct place. That’s it. The market does the rest. I made $2,500 today across 5 accounts. Two setups. Done before 11am. 100% win rate. My longest trade was 4 minutes. What did I do before the setup? I laid on the couch with the dog and watched a Colbert Questionaire YouTube video. During? I sat at the table with my fiance and talked about how she slept while she had breakfast and I watched the setup solidify itself on the chart, then I put in my orders. Once it kicked in I ignored the laptop and talked about our day until the computer said ORDER FILLED, meaning it won. I did that one more time. After? I screen shot my trades and put them in their proper folder on my phone and logged my trades in my journal and all of its logistics and details, from time, risk, reward, how I behaved etc. Took less than 5 minutes. I then cleaned out my fiancé’s van, made a bagel with cream cheese, and currently back to laying on the couch with the dog. More money in a day than I made in a month at my old job with less than an hours worth of work and I didn’t sweat and my back doesn’t hurt and I did all of that while laying on my comfy couch with my dog and hanging with the misses? Don’t know about the rest of you all but that is what day trading looks like for me. Good luck.
