I used to trade the open exclusively but my results were inconsistent. started logging everything permanently on involio and realized my win rate in the first 15 minutes was way lower than I thought. now I wait for the initial chop to settle and enter after the first 20-30 minutes. way more consistent since I made that switch based on what the actual data showed me.

Hell fuck no!!! The most I ever do is hold a stock overnight and I might sell it in the first minute or so if I don't sell it pre-market. But buy/sell in that first minute? You're gambling at that point, not trading.

I think they call that strategy ORB (Opening Range Breakout). Personally I never take a position at open, sometimes I use the 5m opening candle break as an entry and place stop above 5m open candle if I see a setup so to answer your question, at the very least I wait 5 minutes after open to take an entry.

My whole strategy is based on the first 10 mins of Retail Premarket Open (7am est). News drops @0700, hits my scanners by 0705, take my $0.20-$0.40 per share and my day is done. Some days there no news at that time so it's an easy no trade day (emotionally harder than said but doable over time).

Openings tend to be extremely volatile and high volume. It's very very hard to "guess" where a stock is going at open. There are traders who specialize in the open, but they’re not just buying the first move, they’re usually watching pre-market levels, gap context, volume, and overall market direction (SPY, QQQ). I notice those who do that normally use the 5d/5min chart and wait for the first candle close after open to see what the trend may be. If you’re new, I’d be careful trading the open live

it's kind of difficult to get a accurate idea of the days range and market trend in those first 15 minutes. that's why it is suggested to avoid trading during that time. obviously there are days when this is not the case and any pullback from the trend is a good entry point but that is not typical.

I experimented with trading the open once. Scalping the first couple of 1m candles. If you get the direction right then you can make your daily profit in the first 30 seconds. You can't really set stop losses like this though so you have to have your finger on the button. Overall if felt like gambling and super high adrenaline. Didn't really enjoy it to be honest!
