지리적 조건만으로 어떤 나라는 구조적으로 발전이 어렵다는 생각이 제기됐다. 이는 투자 시장에서 '국가 리스크'를 평가하는 데 중요한 시사점을 준다. 독자들은 지정학, 자원, 인프라 조건이 경제 성장과 어떤 관련이 있는지 고민해볼 필요가 있다.

어떤 나라들은 지리적 조건 자체 때문에 경제 발전이 아예 어려운 건 아닐까 하는 생각이 들었다. 예를 들어 아프가니스탄은 산악 지형이 대부분이고, 농업에 적합한 평지가 별로 없으며 내륙국이라 무역 접근성도 떨어진다. 이러다 보니 발전이 정말 어렵지 않을까 싶다.

반면 한국이나 일본은 지하자원이 그렇게 풍부하진 않지만, 쌀 농사에 유리한 기후 덕분인지 그래도 산업 기반이 잘 잡혔다. 예를 들어 한국엔 석탄과 텅스텐이 있고, 일본도 요오드를 비롯해 일부 자원이 있다. 물론 지형이나 기후가 좋은 것만으로 모든 게 해결되지는 않겠지만, 처음부터 너무 조건이 안 좋은 나라들은 구조적으로 불리한 게 아닐까 싶다.

1950년대만 해도 UAE나 사우디도 황량한 사막이었죠. 지금은 어떤가요?
지리보다는 오히려 '누가 어떻게 나라를 운영하느냐'가 더 큰 변수입니다.

아프가니스탄도 자원 자체는 많아요. 문제는 30년 넘는 전쟁 때문에 60년은 뒤처졌다는 거죠. 지금은 중국과 협력도 시도하고 있고, 주변국에 물도 공급할 수 있는 여력이 있어요.

아프리카도 지리적으로 불리한 나라들이 많은데, 반대로 자원이 풍부한 곳도 있죠. 국경이 자연적 경계나 오래된 부족 기반으로 그려졌다면 더 나았을 수도 있어요. 이제는 너무 늦은 걸까요.

모든 나라가 OECD 수준의 부자가 될 필요는 없어요. 모두가 그걸 꿈꾸는 것도 아니고요. 의미 있고 만족스러운 삶이라는 게 더 중요할 수도 있죠.
하지만 이런 얘기는 여기선 안 통할지도 모르겠네요.

결론적으로는, 네. 일부 나라들은 구조적으로 제한될 수 있어요.
하지만 그 나라 사람들이 가진 종교적 신념도 발전을 스스로 저해하는 요소 중 하나라는 생각도 들어요.

유튜브에 보면 어느 나라들은 태생부터 불리했던 이유들을 다룬 채널이 있어요.
아프리카를 예로 들면, 인류의 시작은 거기였지만 육지에 둘러싸여 있고 지형이 높아서 강을 통해 제대로 이동조차 못 해요. 해안선도 너무 매끈해서 항구 건설이 안 되고요. 그래서 선진국으로 발전할 기반이 너무 약하다는 얘기가 많죠.

There’s a YouTube channel that has episodes that just talk about how screwed some countries have been since inception.

Africa is one I remember, it may have been the birth place of humanity but it could never survive even the first technological eras because the entire country is basically landlocked. It’s so elevated that most rivers cannot be traversed by boats, the coastal shoreline is the smoothest coasts in the world and thus cannot support ports. Africa can never be a 1st world country because it will always be catching up with the rest of the world.

아프가니스탄은 다양성이 더 필요하다고 봐요. 소말리아인, 나이지리아인, 인도인 같은 다양한 이민자가 유입되면 미국이나 캐나다, 유럽처럼 더 강하고 풍요로운 문화가 생길지도 모르죠.

Afghanistan just needs more diversity. An influx of Somalians, Nigerians and Indians would make Afghanistan much stronger and enrich their culture tremendously, just as it has in the US, Canada and Western Europe.
