I have dedicated hotkeys in a dedicated macro pad that's coded to a specific program's order entry keys.

I can literally flat full account in one keystroke, regardless of whether I'm focused on that window or not.

That being said, I've never needed to use it and I hope never to need it.

I do however use flat position for a symbol quite often. It's usually how I get out of trades no longer valid.

The rest of the keys are bound to buy at ask and bid and sell at ask and bid and dials move up or down my limit and stops if I have them. I use these for quick scalps if I know how to expect the market to move.

But I usually click trade in and out for most of my trades cuz I know what I'm looking for and know what I don't want to see. I am also not risking a substantial amount of my account every trade.

And I also have a phone on speed dial to my broker. Again, never used but you never know.

This results in few places where I actually need those keys. But it's useful. The peace of mind gives me confidence in the execution.


But that all being said, you don't need this. I did this with mouse and keyboard because I knew what to expect for each trade type. I don't need to calculate because that calculation is done well beforehand. I've anticipated trade so those are already queued up in the system as defaults or quick settings. I've done the legwork beforehand already.

I've put OCO brackets already and move them quickly using hot keys before. Those hot keys are on my macro pad now. Two clicks puts me in the trade and the stop loss is in position.

But you can't do that with TradingView if I remember correctly. You need a better program. Choose the right ones!

If you are watching every move of your position with eagle eyes, and have your fingers on the keys at all times, you really don’t need to worry about placing a stop (unless you want to automatically place a stop several pennies away from tour fill price in case there is some catastrophic event). The beautiful thing about scalping is that you have complete control of your entry and exit and do not need to worry about chaotic price action….just manually exit immediately if your position goes against you.

Well I use Think Or Swim, and there are buttons on there that buy/sell bid or buy/sell ask. And it puts your limit order in immediately. Whether it fills or not is up to the available shares, or whos buying/selling that price. But i usually get filled unless the price starts absolutely flying, and im a second or 2 too late.

Also, stop having multiple trades open at a time. Just open one, then stay in it with 100% focus until its closed.

I only trade one stock at a time. I scalp and day trade on momentum. I really don't use hot keys yet but I use my buttons. I really don't use market orders but I still have the buttons listed. I use BUY BID - SELL ASK. & BUY ASK - SELL BID. I have a mental sell price if the stock goes wrong on me and I watch the candle, time & sale and level 2 for my profit exit. I use the TOS platform.

Get a fast front end. Get a fast broker. TV is slow and so is TWS though I generally like IB as a broker. Get fast internet. Set up hotkeys. I also use preconfigured brackets. The main speed advantage comes from these brackets. For instance, in one second, the price rises 8 ticks and falls 10. In that half a second a bracket already shoved a stop in, trailed it up, and got me out of the trade.

Speed comes from preparation, not clicking faster.
Clear rules, predefined levels, and strict risk management matter more than reaction time.

Dont sweat the whole calculating the share size blablabla. Some brokers will let you set a hotkey to buy a percentage of your buying power. I like 25%. I place a feeler in, then scale up. Say shift+1 on the ask for 25%, shift+2 for 50%, shift+3 for 100%. Then you can scale out with other keys on the bid, again 25, 50, 100.

If your broker doesnt do %, know in advance your share size for a certain ticker you are watching. Or just make a hotkey for 100 shares, and hit that key again to ad up. Then have a "close all positions" hotkey to bail out.

Focus on low float, small cap stock with catalyst news who gapped more than 10% up their close price, and have lots of trading volume. Try pre-market also to avoid halts and the bulk of institutional desks.

For the love of gawd, do not hold onto losers.

Hotkeys and a macropad, with clear sizing, plus in/out rules already drilled into your head

I calculate size based on ATR in advance and accept a little variance in exchange for entering a lot faster. 

When scalping, speed > perfection IMO. Delayed execution will cost me a lot more than a bit of variance in size and R.
