Hard to say it. Its not cheap or fast enough to actually be used in decentralized finance. And it doesn't have smart contacts. Store of value is the argument most people use.

It will likely survive as “digital gold”, but it clearly is not gonna be some leading tech that will change the world. AI killed the hype.

"Btc is dead" is always a sign that the cycle bottom is nearing.

you will likely continue some unguaranteed long term return but the days of crazy high returns are over I think.

The past few years have been dreadful for BTC. It started as a genuine interesting alternative to currency, to be completely hijacked by institutions and Michael Saylor who controls the supply and market and has no interest in it converting to a currency ( he has said that himself that it's likely impossible).

I am not optimistic.

It won't ever die in the sense of going to 0. But its best days are behind it.

My take being a bitcoin bear: the big hedge fund /smart money has left the building. It’s been flat so who’s holding the bag? Retail. There’s no catalyst to pump it. AI is the hot shiny toy. I’ve been hearing for years oh mass adoption blah blah. Uhh…when?

The flatness lately is telling IMO.

My grumble with the crypto world is a lot of the gurus and shit got lucky and never learned when to take profit/be happy with gains (even small) or taking the bigger picture into account.

Not to mention nobody full ports into a single asset.

Celebrities aren’t launching their pump and dump coins anymore.

There’s a much larger world to investing and it’s not easy but crypto shouldn’t be the only hill to die on.

Edit: the assholes that just say buy more aren’t looking out for you - they’re trapped in their state of not admitting they lost money and are doubling down.

I'm not sure who you're seeing saying that, but I guess they're saying it because of both the lack of retail interest and also the drawdown in price.

In reality, it's being incorporated into much more technology nowadays, there's decent support for transfers, collateralized loans, credit, etc. The infraestructure is being built up and big banks have really gone in on incorporating cryptocurrencies into their portfolios in some way or another.

In this sense, Bitcoin is very much safe. In fact, it's increasing support and really maturing as a technology and asset type.

What's also true is that most people know about it from the last two cycles when the hype really blew up the price in some serious bubbles than naturally popped. Since most newcomers were unprepared for such a bust, it really burned their image of Bitcoin and itself (that there are so many shady shitcoin projects around in the 'crypto space' also doesn't help). Given that we're deep in a bear market now and price has been falling for months, for someone unfamiliar with Bitcoin's regular booms and busts, this definitely looks worrying since the price has fallen by more than half in only half a year.

But actually, Bitcoin is a very volatile asset (even in volatility has been decreasing sharply over time) and these drawdowns are pretty normal for it (they have happened about once every four years since its inception). There're are established ways of looking at price behaviour and guaging ranges of price action, etc. So while price might be suffering at the moment, most current holders and a lot of people on the sidelines that have held in the past are looking at price as an indication of when to buy and not whether to buy. The assumption is that Bitcoin will recover as it always has before. As long as this trust in Bitcoin itself is held by a lot of money (as is clear), then each bust cycle will simply establish a new price for trading correcting imbalances in demand and supply that continually come up (supply shock is one of the traditional reasons, but global liquidity and capital rotation are others). And since Bitcoin tends to hit bottom and then grow rapidly as money sitting out moves back in, these large growth rates naturally attract others as well.

So Bitcoin isn't going anywhere. It nees a bit of time to find a new price range at which to trade, but once that happens it'll be business as usual. All those altcoins that retail poured into on the other hand, have lost retail interest and are sort of dying out. Bitcoin continues to increase its dominance of the cryptocurrency market, and large cryptocurrencies are faring much better than medium and small projects with a few exceptions (such as privacy coins like Monero or Zcash).

As for whether you should buy now, it's tricky to say. We might be at the very end of a bear market or we could still be three or four months away if the global geopolitical situation (with Iran) continues pushing down risk assets globally. The safest play is normally to DCA in, buying a little bit at a time at a regular pace to split up pruchases and get an average price over the time range. If you see Bitcoin drop to the low 50's and we're not in a recession nor expecting one globally, then that might be a good time as well simply given how low that would be and the fact that we're so oversold (meaning price rises are increasingly likely.

It happens every cycle (particularly during downtrends/bear market). These people are nowhere to be seen during a bull run - but that's when the moon boys start to wild on X/Reddit. Rinse and repeat.
