Ive been a professional trader for 25 years. Ive mentored a handful of traders over the years. About half of them also became professionals. This is what I tell them. Investing comes first. You should be fully funding a Roth or an IRA first. Then if you want to trade, just be fine with taking them money you want to start with and burning it.

How old are you? I would advise you to first study long term investing first. Max out all registered accounts you have and then think about putting money into trading. So while you are learning, your money will still grow passively. Create a robust and backtested strategy. Then go into forward testing with that strategy. Once you have proved that your backtest works, go live.

If your financial advisor is giving you this info and it’s somehow shocking and news to you, then yes…they’re right. The fact that you’re asking these questions as though they are some negative gloom and doom against your “dreams” tells me you’re not ready. This isn’t magic son. You WILL lose money. You WILL be wrong. This is not a feel good story where the world is against you, but yet…you just need the confidence and gumption and can do attitude to “win” Putting it simply….are you willing to lose just as much as you gain? “I feel my dreams are crushed” - this is your key point. Financial advisor should consider your dreams. If instead of trading it was table tennis what your advisor say? I mean you lose money on training gear, renting tables, entry fees for competitions. Why dont you allocate 10% of your savings for hobbies like trading and only trade what you can loose. I bet your financial advisor can live with that.

Start paper trading. Track your returns, winrate, profit factor. Keep doing this till you're profitable on paper for a good amount of time.

When u think you're ready start with a few shares or small amount per trade. Stick with that for a few months.

Scale up slowly over time.

Importantly don't risk too much on each trade. If you can make money with small trades you can do it later with bigger trades but first prove the stats out.
